Business Insurance
The covers most businesses need,
and the ones they often overlook.
Every Business Needs Insurance. Not Every Business Knows Which.
Most businesses know they need some form of insurance. Fewer are confident they have the right combination, or that the cover they have in place genuinely reflects what they do and what they're exposed to.
This page covers the core insurance types that apply to most businesses, regardless of sector. For more specific advice on the risks and covers relevant to your industry, explore our sector pages.
The Covers Most Businesses Need
Public Liability
Cover for your legal liability to third parties, members of the public, customers, or visitors, for injury or property damage arising from your business activities. If your business has any contact with the public, this is a fundamental cover.
Employers Liability
A legal requirement for any business with employees, full time, part time, temporary, or casual. The minimum limit required by law is £5 million, though most policies are written at £10 million as standard. The scope needs to reflect who actually works under your direction.
Business Contents and Assets
Cover for the physical assets your business depends on, furniture, equipment, stock, and specialist items, whether at your premises, in transit, or temporarily elsewhere.
Business Interruption
If something forces your business to stop operating, the financial consequences start immediately. BI cover replaces lost revenue during the period it takes to recover, and the indemnity period needs to reflect how long a realistic recovery would actually take.
Professional Indemnity
For any business that provides advice, designs, or professional services for a fee. It responds to claims that your work caused a client a financial loss, and covers the legal costs of defending allegations even when you're not at fault.
Products Liability
If your business manufactures, supplies, or distributes physical products, you carry liability for injury or property damage those products cause to third parties. This is often included within a public liability policy but the scope needs careful consideration.
The Covers Businesses Often Overlook
Management Liability
Directors and senior managers can be held personally liable for decisions made in the running of a business. Management Liability insurance combines Directors and Officers cover, Employment Practices Liability, and Corporate Legal Liability, protecting both the individuals and the business itself.
Commercial Crime
Cover for financial losses arising from fraud, theft, and increasingly sophisticated external attacks including fraudulent payment instruction fraud and social engineering. These losses are commonly excluded from standard business policies, making specific commercial crime cover worth serious consideration for any business handling payments or managing finances.
Cyber Insurance
Every business that holds customer data, processes payments, or relies on connected systems carries cyber exposure. Cover needs to address incident response costs, business interruption, third party liability, and regulatory obligations under UK GDPR, not just the technology failure itself.
Legal Expenses
Cover for the legal costs of disputes that fall outside your main liability policies, including employment tribunal defence, contract disputes, tax investigations, and property disputes. Legal costs can escalate quickly even in relatively straightforward cases.
Business Travel
For businesses whose staff travel, whether domestically or internationally, cover for their medical expenses, cancellation, lost luggage, and personal liability while away on business.
